Muottas Muragl has been drawing visitors towards the high ground above the Engadin since the funicular opened in 1907. The summit sits between St Moritz and Pontresina, with the lakes of the valley spread out below and the Bernina range rising beyond.
The short Philosophers’ Trail leads away from the summit with a series of viewpoints and viewing instruments along the way. The instruments are pointed towards the surrounding peaks, encouraging you to stop and work out what you are looking at rather than simply taking in the panorama as a whole.
It is an easy place to become distracted by the view. A few steps along the trail reveal another angle, while the eyepieces pick out individual peaks across the valley, including Piz Bernina. Muottas Muragl is less about reaching a summit than finding a good place to stop and look.
We enjoy being out in nature so much because it has no opinion about us Friedrich Nietzsche
