Saas Fee

Pearl of the Alps

Saas Fee

The car-free village of Saas-Fee sits in a vast glacial amphitheatre, encircled by more than a dozen peaks rising above 4,000 metres. Among them are the mighty Dom at 4,545 metres, the highest mountain entirely within Switzerland, and the Allalinhorn, whose ridged flanks dominate the skyline opposite the village. Known as the “Pearl of the Alps,” Saas-Fee feels both remote and refined, a place where narrow lanes wind between wooden chalets and electric carts hum softly in place of cars. The air is crisp and thin, filled with the distant echo of waterfalls and the constant gleam of snow and ice that linger well into summer.

From the summit of Mittelallalin, reached by underground funicular and cable car, the view opens in every direction, a panorama of peaks, glaciers, and sky. Here sits the world’s highest revolving restaurant, a slow-turning platform where diners watch the mountains drift by as they eat, the horizon shifting through a continuous 360-degree panorama of glaciers and peaks. Above Saas-Fee, the scale of the landscape is overwhelming, yet the village below remains calm and self-contained, a perfect balance between human presence and the vast silence of the high Alps.

After fleeing Nazi Germany in 1938, playwright Carl Zuckmayer found refuge in Saas-Fee and was immediately captivated by its extraordinary setting:

You stand at the end of the world and at its very centre all at once.Carl Zuckmayer
